Heritage

From a cinema screen to a working engine bay.

The Art Deco tower of the former cinema on the Saamir premises, Omar Al Mukhtar Street, Gaza.
The streamline-moderne tower of the former cinema — the landmark that became Saamir.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the Saamir premises were home to one of Gaza's oldest cinemas — for many, the oldest — a streamline tower that lit up Omar Al Mukhtar Street when the city gathered for the evening screening.

The same address became a house of engineering. Before the First Intifada, Saamir was supplying and overhauling marine engines, and served as a principal repair facility for Opel and General Motors vehicles across the city.

Its affiliated company held the exclusive General Motors franchise for Gaza and the West Bank — a rare distinction for a family firm on a single street corner.
