Heritage

From a cinema screen to a working engine bay.

The premises opened in 1940 as Cinema Alsaamir — completed in 1944 and remembered as the first cinema in the Gaza Strip. A streamline-moderne picture house on Omar Al Mukhtar Street, it brought the classic films of Egypt's golden age to Gaza, drawing crowds beneath its Art Deco tower for the evening screening.

The cinema ran for three decades, screening its last films around 1970 before the premises turned to new use; the venue was formally wound up years later. Its Art Deco tower still stands over the premises today.

Alongside it, the family built a house of engineering. Saamir supplied and overhauled marine engines and became a principal repair facility for Opel and General Motors vehicles; its affiliated company, Saamir Commercial Agencies, was the franchised distributor of General Motors for Gaza and the West Bank.

Cinema Alsaamir opens

1944

The landmark completed

The streamline-moderne building is finished, screening Egypt's golden-age films.
